Aniridia patients

What is Aniridia?

Aniridia is the complete or partial absence of the iris. Although the condition is usually congenital, injuries to the iris can also lead to an iris defect. A foldable iris implant, which is used to reconstruct the defective iris in a surgical procedure, can be an adequate treatment option for aniridia. The ARTIFICIALIRIS by HumanOptics allows you to achieve a natural appearance so that the artificial iris corresponds to the original appearance as closely as possible.* For this purpose, color photos are taken of the remaining defective iris and of the iris of the unaffected, healthy eye. Based on these templates, the HumanOptics experts can produce an individual and precise color pattern. If there is no iris left to take a color photo, it is possible to design the eye color according to a freely chosen photo of any iris.

Special features of the Irisimplant
ARTIFICIALIRIS by HumanOptics

The ARTIFICIALIRIS by HumanOptics not only significantly improves vision but also successfully recreates the natural appearance of the iris. This often significantly improves the quality of life for patients affected by aniridia.

The unique iris implant by HumanOptics is medically approved.

We individually handcraft the color of the CUSTOMFLEX® ARTIFICIALIRIS to match the original iris of the affected patient and manufacture in Germany. We take a photo of the intact iris as the basis for designing the color of the iris implant. We also pay attention to the finest color nuances of the iris in order to achieve a natural appearance. In most cases, you will hardly be able to differentiate the eye affected by aniridia from the healthy eye with the CUSTOMFLEX® ARTIFICIALIRIS.

The clinical efficacy of the ARTIFICIALIRIS has been confirmed in more than 60 peer-reviewed publications (last modified 12/2022). In 2022, the implant celebrated its 20th product anniversary.

WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY
zitat icon

“For some years now, there has been an artificial iris made of silicone (Dr. Schmidt Intraocularlinsen/HumanOptics), which … is foldable and can thus be implanted via a small incision. This contributes to an excellent reduction of glare sensitivity, which is constantly bothering patients, along with a good cosmetic effect.”

“The artificial iris prosthesis set a new standard in the reconstruction of complex anterior segment pathologies with partial or complete aniridia. Our patients benefit from improved visual function, reduced glare and a satisfactory cosmetic appearance. The latter is important and legitimate, considering that trauma patients are usually young and crave a cosmetically acceptable outcome.”
